An open letter to Bruins fans…
Tonight has been a harried, frantic, high point, low point, and ultimate low point for us. Yes, I say us, for, coming from a mixed marriage, (Bruins/Blackhawks) as I do, I feel your pain and empathize with a soul that mirrors the agony and frustration of decades of upset and abandon.
You have tonight to drink yourself into a slow dull fade only to wake to the shock of your own screams in your pillow. That’s it. It’s done. Until next season.
Or maybe not. I want to offer you an opportunity. A chance to live again through similar eyes. A glance toward the midwest to a city, similar to yours. A city that works, like yours. A city with a thick history in political figures, like yours. A city tied up in a rope of mass transit, streaming cabs, a bustling downtown and graceful architecture, like yours. We have passion, and love and a never ending sentimentality for this city, as you do.
We even have a ball park smack dab in the middle of our urban oasis, that has stood the test of time, second only to one.
We are hearty, live hard, die hard people. We know pain. We have watched our boys of summer come and go for over a century on that field, never tasting the ultimate prize. I think you remember that feeling.
We also have cradled in our city of big shoulders an original six team, as do you. One we adore. One we relish. One we watch with eyes like saucers as these young, daring men rip through the ice amazing us time and time again. We saw that same look in your eyes, and we wish to share our beloved team with you.
Think about it. You would love a watered down Hurricane. You would run pale at the sight of Sidney Crosby doing pirouettes with Lord Stanley’s Cup. And, frankly, in the immortal words of Patrick Sharp, “Red Wings make me gag.”
Regain your momentum. The season does not have to be over. Live through the eyes of Chicago. The time is now.
Go Bruins.
Go Blackhawks.
Sold.
